Foraging for Blackberries & Apples

Freshly foraged blackberries and apples are the best option for this dessert. Of course, freshly picked tastes better but it’s not just that. Foraging for fruit is a responsible way to eat seasonally for better health AND enjoy desserts in a package-free way.

If you don’t know much about foraging local food, and would like to give it a try, read our Foraging in England for Beginners Guide.

If you don’t feel comfortable foraging, you could visit a pick-your-own farm instead. Take reusable containers to weigh before you start picking, instead of accepting single-plastic ones, and make a day of it!

We highly recommend you freeze fresh blackberries and chopped apple in the Autumn so that you still have local, zero waste fruit to use in your Vegan Apple and Blackberry Crumble during the winter months too. In order to be really prepared, portion your blackberries and apple chunks together in the freezer to make defrosting and using them much easier.

If you have missed the seasonal window for fresh blackberries and apples, or you prefer buying fruit from a store, try to find somewhere that sells fruit loose. You should find this super easy with apples, which can go straight into one of your own reusable bags.

Vegan Cream or Custard

Choosing to eat vegan, doesn’t mean you have to give up cream or custard – dairy free alternatives to both of these still pair beautifully with a homemade crumble. We love vegan products that come in recyclable cardboard packaging, like Alpro Soya Single Cream or Oatly Vegan Cream. We believe vegan cream is the best compliment to your Autumnal crumble on milder, blue-sky days.

If you are enjoying your Vegan Apple and Blackberry Crumble in the colder months, definitely go for a delicious and ‘creamy’ vegan custard like Alpro Soya Custard or Oatly Vegan Custard. Heat your vegan custard and add an extra sprinkle of cinnamon to serve.

Instructions
  1. Pre heat the oven to 180'c.
  2. Pour the flour, sugar and cinnamon into a mixing bowl and stir to combine.
  3. Add the butter, chopping into smaller chunks as you add. Combine the butter - we prefer to do this with our hands. For a delicious crumble you want a mixture that isn't too dry. If you feel you need to use a little extra butter to create more of a crumbly texture, add more butter.
  4. Chop the apple into chunks. Place it and the blackberries in the base of an over proof dish.
  5. Add the crumble mixture on top of the fruit, ensuring all the fruit is covered and smoothing the top with your hands or the back of a spoon.
  6. Place the crumble into the pre heated oven and bake for around 45 minutes or until the crumble topping is golden in colour.
  7. Serve with Alpro Soya Single Cream or Alpro Soya Custard.
